This panel discussion explored career develop in Japan. It featured two Ivy-league graduates from the US working in Japan and an American student studying in Japan. Speakers shared the challenges they have faced in Japan and how they overcame them, cultural insights, and advice for success in foreign cultures.
Cory is currently working as an Environments Design Lead at IDEO Tokyo. As an architect, he explores weaving atmosphere and emotion into physical and virtual environments. Before IDEO, he worked for Michael Maltzan Architecture, junya.ishigami+associates, and indie video game developer HomeMakeLabs. Cory earned his Master of Architecture from Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
Sophie Meralli is a venture investor at Eight Roads, a global venture capital fund backed by Fidelity Investment. As part of the Japan Ventures team, she backs and partners with ambitious founders in Japan focusing on enterprise tech and fintech. She holds an MBA from MIT Sloan, an MSc in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and a BA from Paris Dauphine University.
Luigi is a fourth-year student at Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics, joining the Global Markets division of Citigroup Japan upon graduation this fall. Luigi has been through the Japanese new grad hiring process as a foreigner and hopes to shed some light on the often-exclusionary nature of Japanese society. Originally from the US, Luigi is passionate about the forces moving financial markets, countryside trains, and fishing.
